Rick Buenaventura, who shot most of the photos, tells the following story about the gig:
"In the early to mid 1980’s I was totally into the American punk sound and SST was
THE LABEL. I lived in New Orleans and in the Summer of 1985 we road-tripped to St.
Louis to catch Hüsker Dü. We read about the gig in the Rolling Stone! A friend,
Brian, and I did the drive and another friend, Jeanette from Chicago, flew down and met
us. After the show, the band and some punk fans hung out on the Mississippi River bank.
Grant shot off some fireworks [Grant is brandishing a Roman candle in the second photo
from bottom]. I got the band to sign a postcard I had gotten from our hotel. I cut my hand
sliding down the river bank and bled on the card. Greg noticed the blood and commented ['Not
my blood, Buddy']. Show was June 20, 1985 at the Mississippi Nights club in St. Louis.
In support of the New Day Rising album."
He identifies the people in the group photo as follows (l-r): "Brian, Bob Mould, Greg Norton, me in back, Jeanette in front, Grant Hart, five unknown St. Louis punks." The autographed postcard he describes, complete with bloodstains, is here: |
