Cobb's misdeeds and the descent into sheer lunacy that marked his later years have been well documented and were widely publicized by the popular film about his life. And all indications are that even the most improbable-sounding stories are unexaggerated. But there's none of that in Royston. Here he remains a hero, the man who was a charter member of the Baseball Hall of Fame and who funded the local hospital. From what evidence I gleaned, nobody in Royston is getting rich off his memory either. I encountered no fellow pilgrims during my visit, and the dusty guestbook at the town hall was light on signatures.
